Civic addresses are points with an assigned number on a virtual map. The numbers direct dispatchers to your point, which gives them information of your driveway's longitude and latitude. This information is passed onto emergency services, who can put that information into their GPS system and wound up directly at your doorstep!
With this being said, there is always the possibility of system crashes, misunderstandings, etc. We are still human, so although this method may not always be guaranteed, it is a new and improved way of creating an understanding between a civilian, a dispatcher, and the nearest emergency service.
